Who Are We?
Ten years ago it was simple.
We were a country on the mend after a dastardly and tragic attack at the hands of Osama bin Laden. Our resolve was strong and the objection was clear: Justice.
Justice for those innocently slain.
Justice for people who lost loved ones.
Justice for people we didn’t even know.
The term ‘United’ in United States of America finally started to become semblant. The stars and stripes were prevalent on houses and cars nationwide. Being American was something to be proud of. Patriotism was unflinching.
But in the years following our resolve became fuzzy and after a drawn out war against terror people became skeptical of what we as a country were trying to do. Was this war for oil? For WMDs? For justice? For revenge? Cynicism was rampant. Sniping between Republicans and Democrats was played out over the media. Bickering existed amongst people of different cultures, ethnicities, and social classes. The world’s perception of America lowered. This combined with questionable business practices from some of the top companies led to a recession.
And now that it’s ten years after the attacks of 9\11, being an American is somewhat an embarrassment.
What has happened to our resolve as a country?
Why can’t we be united once again?
When are we going to stop bitching and man up as a country?
Where is our heart? Our pride?
How did we let this happen to ourselves?
Who are we?
Ten years later and my answer is clear. I’m an American Born in this country and proud of it. I’ll never forget what happened on September 11, 2001. To forget them or minimize them would be un-American. My resolve as it was ten years ago.
Does yours still hold true? If not, why are you still here?
